    Learning outcomes of the course unit
    After completing this course student:
    - is familiar with the principles and practises of waste management
    - knows waste legislation and its applications
    - knows the waste management techniques
    - knows waste recycling and the secondary uses of waste material
    - can recycle and manage recycling systems
    - knows the principles of landfill construction and management of waste management sites
    - can compost and do simple laboratory analyses concerning biowaste and compost quality
    - has adopted the 3R principle and understands the necessity of reducing waste amounts an defficient secondary use of waste materials
    Prerequisites and co-requisites
    Basic Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry courses, Basics for Environmental Technology and Management
    Course contents
    - Composition, collection, transportation and treatment of waste material
    - Waste legislation, policies and regulations
    - Waste treatment technologies (landfills and their operation, waste incineration, biowaste treatment, hazardours waste treatment)
    - Laboratory exercises: composting, leachate tests

    Assessment methods and criteria

    Min attendance to the lectures is 60 % and laboratory work 100 %.

    Not approved

    Attendance to lectures (including excursions) is less than 60 % and laboratory work less than 100 % or any of the following is missing: presentations, learning diary, laboratory work report, short tests (quizzes) undone or failed.

    Satisfactory

    Minimum attendance requirements fullfilled and other given tasks done in a satisfactory level. In this case the average knowledge of the taught subjects is in the basic level.

    Good

    The student shows understanding of the waste management systems and the student is able to apply some of the knowledge gained during the course when doing the assignments. The student is able to express thoughts and reflections in his/her learning diary. The student knows group work skills. The student is able to utilize the possibility for co-operation and collective learning by participating the lectures, excursions and group works. The students is able to work according to instructions given and by meeting the deadlines.

    Excellent
