    Learning outcomes of the course unit
    Students have basic theoretical, analytical and practical skills for information technology, aural skills, history of music, music analysis and harmony. They have the ability to apply reached skills to their actual work duties.

    Information Technology
    The student is able to use computer hardware and office applications according to the needs of working life. The student knows the basics of digital audio, photo and video recording and how to edit them to the extent required by his / her profession. He understands the impact of different music distribution channels on recording quality and hearing. The student has the basic skills to use information technology as a tool for international communication.

    Music Theory and Harmony
    Students have learned the basic terminology in music theory, in homophonic chord progression and the principles of it, and basic homophonic tonal structures. They are capable of applying this into writing music.

    Music History
    Students have gained knowledge of the fundaments of the history of art music from Renaissance up to Classicism. They recognize characteristics of the various periods of times and the unities and trends formed in different eras.
    Students have advanced knowledge of the stylistic features, trends and repertory of a certain era, genre or other historical unity in music.
    They are capable of applying the knowledge of music history into their own work practises as a musician or music pedagogue.

    Music Analysis
    Students master basic terminology in music analysis and are capable of a small-scale analysis and description of the structures of western classical music from stylistically different eras.

    Ear training
    Student perceive tonal music and its fundaments both by playing/singing and by writing on the basis of heard.

    Competences similar to advanced studies of music school.

    Music Theory and Harmony
    -the basic concepts of music theory and voice leading

    Music History, 5 cr
    - the fundaments of the history of art music from Renaissance up to Classicism
    - the fundaments of the aesthetics of music from various eras
    - recognizing by hearing the characteristics of music samples from various eras

    Music Analysis, 3 cr
    - basic terminology in music analysis
    - literature in music analysis
    - tonal and modal music analysis exercises

    Ear training, 3 cr
    Melodic Perception
    - singing and writing melodies that include diatonic scales, accidentals, broken ground and altered chords and tonal melodies that modulate
    -singing and aurally analysing scales and 3 and 4-note chords
    -transposing music
    Harmonic Perception
    -dictations and aural examples of tonal harmony that includes the most usual ground chords, predominant chords and modal altered chords
    Rhythm
    -dictations of and singing basic rhythms and irregular rhythmic patterns

    Student knows how to use office applications, e-mail and websites. He/she is able to digitally process audio and video.



    Music Theory and Harmony

    The student participates lessons. The assignments indicate significant lack of skills in tonal harmony and voice leading.



    Ear Training

    The student is able to perform exercises more or less fluently, not without mistakes, but the tonic and tempo are recognizable.



    Music Analysis

    The student is able to recognize and describe fundamental structures in music and partly apply the concepts of music theory to his/her analytical perceptions. The analytical notions form an incoherent whole.
