Skills developed in the degree programme
The adult education Degree Programme in Business Administration emphasises the competence in financial administration and jurisprudence. The aim is to combine the competence the students have gained in their prior studies and in working life with the education in business administration.
The aim of the Degree Programme in Business Administration is to offer the students a working environment in which they can actively develop their knowledge and skills. In addition to theoretical studies, the students take part in demanding practical projects offered by companies. After having graduated, the students have initiative, are multidisciplinary, cooperative, fluent in languages and have good computer skills. They are skilled business administration professionals who are able to independently develop in their profession.
Professional status
The graduates have the prerequisites to work in different expert tasks or as independent entrepreneurs in the changing working environment. The tuition is carried out in close collaboration with the business life to ensure that the studies meet the needs of the working life.
Basic values
Studying in the Degree Programme in Business Administration requires the same skills as working life: in addition to language, computing and performance skills, studying in the Degree Programme in Business Administration means adjustment of schedules and commitment to them, collaboration and making of joint decisions as well as independent information acquisition, information evaluation and application. The students also have optionality and alternative models from which to build their degrees. Optionality also means that the students are responsible for the planning of their own studies. At the same time, optionality allows the students to make creative solutions in order to have as good employment opportunities as possible.
Teaching methods
The tuition is carried out using blended learning, which enables the students to complete the degree along with work. The contact teaching takes place in the evenings a couple of times a week and on Saturdays every third week as well as during a couple of intensive weeks. In addition, the studies contain independent studies, for example online studies and reading of literature. The studies can be closely connected to the students’ own work through for example projects, development tasks, thesis, and practical training. The studies consist of courses. The degree is completed in 3.5 years.
If the students have gained business experience in for example work or they have already business competence from prior studies, they may complete the module Basics of Business Skills (22 cr) or parts of it by tests or by making a self-evaluation portfolio. The portfolio describes the students’ own skills and work experience from the viewpoint of each course. Attached to the portfolio are the work, study and course certificates related to the course topic. The course descriptions include the competences the students must demonstrate in order to complete the study module.
Learning outcomes of the degree programme in each study year
Basic studies take place during the first two years of studies after which the students direct their studies according to the professional studies they choose. The aim of the basic studies (60 cr) is to give the students an overview on entrepreneurship and its significance both nationally and internationally.

The aim of the professional studies is to familiarise the students with the topics of their chosen field as well as their theoretical and practical grounds in a manner which enables the students to work independently in expert tasks of the field, in development work or as entrepreneurs. The professional studies consist of compulsory (80 cr) and optional professional studies (10 cr). The students can select 10 credits of professional studies from business administration, professional studies from other degree programmes, or second foreign language studies to optional professional studies. This way the students may acquire themselves several fields of knowledge.
The aim of the free-choice studies is to give the students the opportunity to study interesting subjects from fields outside business administration. The students may select university of applied sciences level studies worth 15 credits from the studies offered by the university of applied sciences or other suppliers of education. The students may complete free-choice studies at the times they choose.
The students can complete the 30-credit supervised practical training or apply for credit transfer based on practical training included in prior higher education studies or prior competence of the Bachelor of Business Administration level.
The aim of the practical training is to familiarise the students with the key practical tasks of their field and to give them the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in practice. The practical training also offers knowledge, skills and experiences from the field of study as well as from the working life. Practical training combines theory with practice and gives a realistic overview on the demands of the field. One of the aims of the practical training is to facilitate employment after the studies.
Students of the option of Legal Expertise have to complete a minimum of half of the practical training in option-related duties.
Adult education students who work in the field during the studies may carry out the practical training by writing a self-evaluation report. The prerequisite for carrying out the training by writing the report is that during the studies the student must work in duties which are connected to the student’s field of study and which are as demanding as the tasks of the Bachelor of Business Administration. Students can have credit transfer for the practical training based on practical training included in prior university of applied sciences studies or prior competence in the field. The goal of the Bachelor’s thesis is to develop and demonstrate the students’ ability to apply their knowledge and skills in practical expert tasks related to their professional studies. The students usually choose the topic themselves. Closely connected to the Bachelor’s thesis is also the writing of the maturity test. It is written when the Bachelor’s thesis is submitted. Projects done alone or in groups may also qualify as Bachelor’s theses. The Bachelor’s thesis may be multidisciplinary if the group contains students from different degree programmes.
The students may carry out a part of the studies or the practical training abroad. In problem situations, the students can have help from the teacher tutors, student counsellors, head of degree programme, practical training and thesis supervisors as well as the study secretaries.
