Skills developed in the degree programme
Electrical engineering is a wide ranging high-tech field. It consists of many different sectors, so know-how of each various sector is also needed. Energy management and the electrical energy and control systems of industry and buildings form the main areas of work. Information technology is often included in the products and systems. The students have to specialize within the field but, at the same time, must know widely the whole field of electrical engineering.
Many assignments in the field of electrical engineering are connected to international projects. Good language skills, communication skills, group work skills and flexibility are required of the people working in the field. There are also good opportunities to private entrepreneurship.
Working life placement
The degree programme in electrical engineering trains the engineers to the tasks in the fields of electrical power engineering and automation engineering. The objective of the education is to ensure the readiness to work in technically demanding tasks and to provide the theoretical basis, which is diverse enough to make the acquisition of the information needed in the assignments possible.
The engineers who have graduated from the degree programme in electrical engineering work in the planning, development, operating, maintenance, marketing and management tasks in the industry, designing offices, companies of the services branch, within the field of the technical trade, in the different institutions of energy and communications or as private entrepreneurs.
Value basis for education
Electrical engineering is high technology which requires mathematical and natural science skills, understanding of the theoretical foundation of the electrical engineering and the skills to use mathematical models which describe practical systems. Many assignments require good scheme, operation description and other documentation interpretation and drawing up skills. In all the assignments of the field, the possibilities of the modern information technology are utilised.
In addition to traditional teaching methods, we use diverse and modern laboratories. These enable the students to use their theoretical knowledge to solve practical problems, and to expand the knowledge they have acquired in class.
The competences provided by the degree programme each study year
The first two years of study for the basis for engineering studies. The studies prepare the students for the three available specialisation options. The students begin their specialisation options after the second year of studies. The specialisations vary in content and in scope as follows:
SPECIALISATION IN ELECTRICAL POWER ENGINEERING
In electrical power engineering the students study the usage of electricity, high and low voltage distribution of the electric energy, the electrical engineering of industry and buildings and supporting technologies, such as the automation systems, control systems and monitoring systems. The graduating engineers know the responsibilities related to the electrical engineering and know how to apply their knowledge in practice. The degree includes the educational standards (electricity validity 1) required for the management of the electrical work. The engineers of this field work in the planning, operating and management tasks of industry, electricity plants and electrical installation, technical trade, administration and as entrepreneurs in both domestic market and in international tasks.
SPECIALISATION IN AUTOMATION ENGINEERING
The students are trained to be engineers specialised in the process automation. They get the necessary theoretical basis for their studies and working life. The students are trained with practical orientation for the future assignments, so that the graduated engineers can easily adapt to the practical tasks. The focuses of the studies are control engineering, electronics, measurement engineering and automation engineering.
SPECIALISATION IN INTELLIGENT MACHINES
The specialisation option in intelligent machines is common for all degree programmes of technology. It is primarily aimed at students of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer systems engineering. The most important focus areas of the specialisation option are machine automation and actuating system technology, electrical power transmission systems, telecommunications technology, automation and control technology along with machine construction and product development. Machine construction requires all-around engineering skills. More and more often, machine construction utilises electrical and computerised systems. The new machines also form self-operated, automated production systems.
STRUCTURE OF STUDIES
The studies consist of 240 credits (240 cr), which are divided as follows:
- Basic studies, 100 cr.
- Professional studies, 80 cr.( three different specialisation options)
- Free-choice studies 15 cr.
- Practical training, 30 cr.
- Bachelor’s thesis, 15 cr.
The basic studies for the students with a vocational school background and for the students with a matriculation examination background differ for 15 credits.
