VALUES AND MISSION
Man's exploitation of the environment, and his efforts to protect it, have become major political and industrial issues all over the world. This has created an increased demand for graduates from a wide range of directly related disciplines. However the environment, and the skills needed to manage it, must be considered in a holistic way, recognising both the interdependence and interactions of people and how we function within the natural environment. The multidisciplinary concept of this engineering programme has a firm grounding in the basic natural sciences, and provides the strategies and tools to integrate environmental management and engineering into all levels and types of business enterprises and other organisations.
Ecological globalisation has created a strong demand for professionals who have the skills to deal with complexity, and the capacity for long-term planning. Such persons are able to visualise beyond their own specialisation, are aware of ecosystems and their boundaries, and can relate the concepts of life cycles and sustainable development to every aspect of modern life.
The program is designed to provide advanced training and education in environmental analysis and management, by a combination of a broad-based curriculum and specialist courses on the management of nature and/or the man-made environment. This prepares students for a wide range of careers, from traditional nature conservation to the technological and managerial careers of environmental orientation.
OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS
Professional studies at both general and advanced level concentrate on giving students comprehensive skills in environmental and natural sciences, economics, technology, communication, leadership, ethics, as well as the actual tools for management. The thesis, and the practical placement are directly related to real problems and the solution of these problems, in various enterprises or administrative projects.
The objectives of the General Professional Studies are to provide students with a comprehensive exposure to the various fields of Environmental Engineering and Management, and to equip them with the information and skills to create and manage environmental systems. Special attention is directed to goal-oriented learning, acquiring and managing information, as well as developing the students' skills in written and spoken communication, their knowledge of entrepreneurship, sustained development, and legislative processes, teaching them how to perform in a variety of work situations and cultural environments. A solid base in mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing allow students to develop specialised knowledge in all ecosystems and their management. At the very heart of the programme is the development of skills for Environmental Assessment and Auditing, Total Quality, Risk Assessment, and Technology for Environmental Engineering.
Additional goals of the General Professional Studies are to introduce students to professional responsibilities in both Environmental Technology, as well as in the workplace, and society in general, at national as well as international levels.
The two options of Advanced Professional Studies available, Environmental Technology and Environmental Management, are designed to provide students with more specialised skills and knowledge in the various fields to equip them to assess and solve environmental management problems. Both share a common entity on total quality and risk management as well as environmental ethics.
When specialising in Environmental Technolcogy the students will gain skills and knowledge to act as an environmental specialist within industry, energy managment, design or assessing the impacts of industrial impacts and quality management in business life, whereas in Environmental Management they will gain more knowledge and skills to act in tasks of an environmental manager in an entreprise or in local, regional or international tasks within public administration and consulting.
