The curriculum has been planned so that the student completes 60 ECTS credits per academic year and 30 ECTS credits per semester

Studies of syllabus is planned so 60 credits are studied in academic year and length of studies is 3,5/4/4,5 years. Planned syllabus may change during studies.

The title of the graduating students of Degree Programme in Media is Bachelor of Culture and Arts. The extent of the Degree Programme in Media is 240 credits (cr) and the education lasts for 4 years. The degree programme has two options which are

Option of Digital Sound and Commercial Music

Competences developed
The Degree Programme in Media aims at providing the students with the ability to work as experts of their own field in working life and creating the preconditions for commercial utilisation of their own expertise for example through independent entrepreneurship.

Core fields of know-how include for example know-how related to artistic, technical, commercial and production tasks of the creative economy in the internationalising markets and especially the interconnection of these fields. The aim is to achieve this know-how by courses in which subject and professional teachers concentrate on content provision, technical implementation and commercial viewpoints within the limits of current production tasks.

Professional status
Bachelors of Culture and Arts graduated from the option of Digital Sound and Commercial Music can work in the internationalising music industry e.g. as recording engineers, mixing engineers, record producers, producers of musical content for diverse media, sound designers, programme sellers as well as in marketing and distribution tasks and in diverse work tasks in the service of record companies and music production companies.

Students graduated from the option of Digital Sound and Commercial Music can produce music for the modern digital online and offline media from sound recording to ready for publishing products. In addition, they have the ability to work in the diverse tasks of concert sound reproduction and event production. Key fields of expertise are marketing of music industry products and the ability to work as independent entrepreneurs.

Structure of degree programme and key contents
Key contents of the education are development, commercialisation and marketing of musical ideas. This combines artistic, technical and commercial expertise.

Key fields include the diverse phases of record production (e.g. composition and writing of the lyrics, creation and development of band projects), midi, recording technique, digital sound processing, surround sound, sound design, film music, mobile and network applications of music, studio production, concert sound reproduction, event production, creative economy (especially music industry) business economy, marketing skills of creative economy, project and teamwork skills and communication and language skills.

Teaching methods
The pedagogical strategy and teaching method of the option of Digital Sound and Commercial Music is theme education that simulates actual work tasks of the field through projects. The themes include e.g. stereo recording, surround recording, business-oriented producer training, sound design, film music, basics of mobile and network applications of music, concert sound and event production, record production, new techniques and advanced studies and creative economy enterprise project. In addition, practical trainings in the key companies of the field around Finland offer a real time connection to the demands of working life.

Learning outcomes and aims of programme / academic year

1st year: Students master the basics of digital sound, recording production and business administration.

2nd year: Students´ know-how expands to diverse formats of music production, concert sound and event production.

3rd year: Students are familiarised with working life by means of practical training, implement a studio production project and are familiarised with the newest techniques.

4th year: Students´ know-how is deepened in production techniques and business administration and they also continue their familiarisation with working life by means of practical training and demonstrate their know-how in the bachelor´s thesis.

Option of Scriptwriting and Visual Expression

Competences developed
The Degree Programme in Media aims at providing the students with the ability to work as experts of their own field in working life and creating the preconditions for commercial utilisation of their own expertise for example through independent entrepreneurship.

The aim is to achieve this know-how by courses in which subject and professional teachers concentrate on content provision, technical implementation and commercial viewpoints within the limits of current production tasks.

Professional status
Students of the option of Scriptwriting and Visual Expression may in future work as for example camera operators, scriptwriters, copywriters, lightning supervisors, visual designers or editors. In addition to the focus areas, their work descriptions may include for example the work tasks of producers, production managers or scripts.

In the option of Scriptwriting and Visual Expression, students learn to produce contents to web-based media in addition to the traditional video and TV production and gain abilities for working in diverse tasks related to audiovisual production. Bachelors of Culture and Arts graduated from the option of Scriptwriting and Visual Expression can write and implement visually for example company videos, advertisements, entertainment programmes, documentaries, TV series and documents and have the abilities to work as independent entrepreneurs.

Structure of degree programme and key contents
Key contents of the education are production, marketing and distribution of moving image and graphic expression. Key themes include audiovisual technique, narration and production which familiarise the students with programmes and equipment as well as the diverse forms of narration in theory and practice.

Key fields of audiovisual production include:

development of ideas, planning and budgeting
diverse phases of scriptwriting
shooting, recording, drawing, editing, finishing and mastering
marketing and distribution of ready products
monitoring and evaluation of production

Examples of other themes are commissioned work, advertisement and documentary. Each participant´s social and teamwork skills are important in the production.

The pedagogical strategy and teaching method of the option of Scriptwriting and Visual Expression is theme education in which students acquire the needed knowledge and skills by studying themes consisting of several credits. In each theme, students study under the supervision of subject and professional teachers. In addition, practical trainings in the key companies of the field around Finland offer a real time connection to the demands of working life.

4th year: Students´ know-how is deepened and they implement a document production and continue their familiarisation with working life by means of practical training and demonstrate their know-how in the bachelor´s thesis.
