Objectives (course unit)

The objective is to learn basic vocabulary and structures of Business French at European competence level (CEFR) A1.

The student:
• will understand French in the most common communication situations of working life
• will be able to communicate with short sentences in the most common situations of working life
• will be able to understand and communicate the main information concerning businesses and workplace
• will know the basic vocabulary and some basic structures of French
• will know the basics of French pronunciation
• will know about the French business culture

• Basic grammar and vocabulary
• Basics of pronunciation

Prerequisites (course unit)

No previous French studies are needed. The course is designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of French.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student
- is able to introduce themselves and their work with short sentences using ready-made materials.
- manages the most common everyday situations in oral communication in an understandable way.
- is able to use the basic vocabulary and structures.
- needs a lot of support in communication.
- knows some basics of the French pronunciation, but pronunciation is difficult to understand.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student
- is able to introduce themselves and their work in a clear and understandable way.
- manages rather well the most common everyday situations in oral communication.
- is able to use the basic vocabulary and structures in an adequate and correct way.
- manages fairly well the basics of the French pronunciation.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student:
- is able to introduce themselves and their work more broadly.
- manages well the most common everyday situations in oral communication.
- is able to use the basic vocabulary and structures in an adequate and correct way.
- manages well the basics of the French pronunciation.

The exam period is 7.12.- 14.12. Resit exam in January 2024.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is based:
- exam 50%
- mandatory oral assignment 30%
- lesson activity and Moodle activity 20%

To pass the course, the student must attend the Zoom lessons (min 80%). The course cannot be passed with independent study.
The student must complete at least 60% of the Moodle tasks. Active participation on the Zoom lessons and Moodle activity can affect the course grade especially in borderline cases.

This is an online course.
- Online lectures on Tuesdays 8-11.
- Independent online study
- Studying in an online enviroment (Moodle) in a small group

Student workload

5 x 27 hours = 135 hours

- Weekly Zoom lessons 3 hours / week. Mandatory attendance 80% of the lessons.
- Independent study

Content scheduling

The course consists of four themes:
1) Meeting someone in the business context (introductions, greetings etc)
2) Visiting the restaurant /café
3) Shopping, asking about the price
4) Telling about oneself (family, business professions)

Completion alternatives

The lessons are mandatory (students should attend at least 80% of the lessons).

This course is aimed also for exchange students.

Further information

This course is especially aimed for business administration students. However, all students interested in learning the basics of French can join the course.
